CLASS SCHEDULE
Sign-In and Jobs:
As our school day begins, we focus on the students being as independent as possible. From taking their coats off and unzipping backpacks to finding their names, we encourage independence but give the support needed. After a seamless sign in we then move to "jobs." A child's job could range from taking attendance to the office, returning a library book or visiting a different classroom to bring a special "gift." Table Time: Children participate in table time activities throughout the week that encompass many skills. These activities can range from letter, number, shape, and color recognition to art, science and exploration activities. The small groups also focus on playing games with peers and taking turns while honing in on pre academic skills. We also incorporate sensory activities such as shaving cream play, wagon rides, moon sand, etc. Work Time: During this time, our students receive one on one adult support to complete and learn new skills, such as letter identification, puzzles, taking turns, cutting, writing/tracing, reading, building, etc. The skills are specific to each child's individual needs. We strive towards independence in all areas. Bathroom: Some children are already toilet trained, but some are not. We strive to have our students on a toilet training schedule and encourage/teach them to ask when they have to use the bathroom. We also focus on proper hygiene and the proper steps in using the washroom and washing their hands. Snack: Snack is a very important time for our class. This is a great opportunity not only to try new foods but to request their wants and needs. Please make sure to send a snack with your child every day. Playground/Obstacle Course: When the weather is nice, we will go outside to the playground as a class or join another class. We may also take a walk to a nearby park or go for a walk around the school. If the weather is cold or rainy, we will set up an obstacle course in the hallway. This is a great opportunity for the children to relax, have fun, and work on their gross motor skills. Circle: Circle is our daily group time. A few of the activities include calendar, days of the week, saying 'Hello' to our classmates, singing songs, reading books and many more fun activities. We use this time to generalize the skills that the students have learned in work or speech to the group setting with a focus on peer interaction. Speech: All the students receive speech therapy throughout the week. It is provided in 1:1, small group and large group. The focus is to express yourself and follow directions but the individual sessions are driven by your child's IEP goals. It is usually a favorite time of the day because the focus is to encourage your child to express his choice of activity - he get's to tell me what we are going to do!! |
Centers:
Centers consist of 3-4 small activities in which the children are paired into small groups and rotate every 10 minutes. These activities can range from art, pre-academic activities, speech, gross motor, fine motor, sensory exploration, and/or computer time. Play/Free Time: During play time the children will get a chance to explore and play independently with many different toys and peers. They will also be guided through structured play, During this time we will explore new toys and learn how to play and share with our classroom friends. Specials Motor Room:We attend motor room once a week. We focus on developmentally appropriate gross motor skills. There are several stations set up for the children to take turns and actively engage in meaningful individual and group activities with their peers. Such activities may include: riding bike or scooter, obstacle course, following two step directions, building blocks, dance, etc. Library: While attending library, the children focus on sitting in a larger group and actively listening to story telling. They are then able to pick a preferred book and bring it home to share with their families. Cooking: This is a great experience to touch, taste, and smell new foods. We cook anything from scrambled eggs and toast to baking cookies in the oven. The children follow directions, take turns, and actively participate in large group. Field Trips: Field trips will be planned through NWSRA throughout the year. Family is encouraged to join us on these memorable trips to fun and exciting new places! |
